In 2013, the “Bahay-bahayan System and Philosophy” was formulated and developed by Gian Carlo de Jesus, a theater director and founder of Balaiwari Immersive and Gamified Experiences, Inc. As a performance philosophy, Bahay-Bahayan began to create meaningful engagement and experiences for audiences, as performances became participatory and interactive as opposed to traditional performer to spectator relationship.

Bahay-Bahayan expanded its range with its application in other disciplines such as tourism, cultural research, events organizing, and pedagogy. This led to Bahay-Bahayan’s development not just as an approach, but as a system and philosophy of its own. In just less than five years, Bahay-Bahayan has been utilized in projects and workshops by reputable institutions, such as the University of the Philippines, SM Development Corporation, SIDC, UNESCO, among others.
